Visiting the beautiful Timios Stavros Church
The church is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in the area due to its traditional architecture and rich history.
The name “Timios Stavros” translates as “Holy Cross” in Greek and refers to the cross on which Jesus Christ is said to have been crucified. The church of Timios Stavros is known for its impressive blue and white bell tower that rises above the main building. The bell tower is a distinctive symbol of the church and can be seen from afar.
The church was built in 1835 and was dedicated to the Holy Cross. During Byzantine times, the island of Santorini was an important trading centre and it is believed that the church was built to serve the community of sailors and merchants who lived in the area.
Christian Basilica of Agia Irini (Saint Irene)
The remains of this ancient church are what gave the island its name when the Venetians arrived in Santorini (Santa Irene = Santorini). It was built in the 5th century, was 25 metres long and had three naves. In 1992 archaeological work was carried out and the remains of a very important Byzantine building were found, and although it has not yet been possible to excavate to the floor of the ancient basilica, it is clear from its size why it gave its name to the place.
It is a twin of the Basilica of St. Apollinaris in Ravenna (built in 493). It is another of the most historic places to visit in Perissa and you will learn a lot about the beginnings of Santorini.
